Stop Selling Discovery Calls That Go Nowhere
Most discovery calls fail before they start. A short application form fixes the pipeline without adding friction for serious buyers.
I used to book every discovery call that came in. My calendar looked busy and my close rate hovered around 18 percent. The problem wasn't my sales skills. It was that half the calls were people who wanted free advice, not coaching.
Then I added a five-question application: current revenue range, what they've already tried, what they want in 90 days, budget range, and a one-line reason now is the right time. Calls dropped by roughly 40 percent. Close rate went to 52 percent. Nothing else changed.
The objection I hear is that applications scare people off. In practice they filter for the people you want. Serious buyers appreciate a coach who screens. The tire-kickers were never going to pay you anyway.
One rule: keep it short. Five questions, two minutes to fill out. If your form takes longer than a coffee order, you've built a quiz, not a filter. Review answers before the call and open with what you noticed. That alone makes the conversation warmer.
